DESCRIPTION

Single crystal diffraction, is used for structure determination and study of solid-state sssembly e. g. in calyx[n]arene. These compounds consist of organic macrocycles (benzene rings linked by methyl bridges) which form hydrophobic cavities, similarly to cyclodextrin, which can contain either small molecules or ions and aromatic rings bridged. These cavities have a top and a bottom edge that can be functionalized appropriately making flexible and attractive chemical machines useful for a wide range of applications ranging from chemistry guest / host, nonlinear optics and the design of molecular sensors and membranes. New calix[n]arene have been functionalized [1-3] and the search for new functionalization of macrocycles is in progress; indeed, the assembly of new macrocycles + guests is particularly interesting for the development of new applications e. g. in the field of molecular recognition as well as in the knowledge of basic processes in supra-molecular chemistry.
