LABORATORY FOR ALGAL GROWTH – IC MONTELIBRETTI

 DESCRIPTION:

The laboratory was conceived and realised to permit the maintenance of the collection of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutants acquired from resource centers or generated in our laboratories. It hosts more than 50 different strains, including site-directed and random mutants of the Photosystem II D1 protein, NPQ-mutants, cell-wall deficient and high-light resistant mutants. Among the D1-mutants, there are stains selected for their resistance or sensitivity toward different classes of herbicides, and strains selected for their capacity to tolerate oxidative-stress-associated conditions.
The laboratory is equipped to grow in reproducible manner mixotrophic and heterothrophic algae cultures under controlled conditions of light, temperature and agitation, and to handle the microorganisms under sterile conditions. There are possibilities to perform short- and long-term treatments under different light and temperature regimes.
