As part of the established collaboration, this project will test natural or newly developed molecules as potential drugs to counter neurodegenerative events, particularly those involved in Alzheimer’s disease. Following up on ongoing studies and previous activities that have led to the publication of numerous scientific papers and inspired the development of collaborative projects over the years, the objective of this agreement will also be to explore the physiological role of the β-amyloid peptide through the different approaches the two parties will implement, and the events that could lead to the loss of its natural function. The role of the Aβ monomer in glucose metabolism and in the neuronal activities that lead to memory consolidation will be explored. Furthermore, the study will explore how post-translational modifications of Aβ, such as nitration by nitrosylating molecules, can affect the conformation and activity of the peptide and its aggregated forms in culture.
