La Dott.ssa Annamaria Mazzone si è laureata con lode presso l’Università degli Studi di Bari con una tesi dal titolo “IR Fourier Transform Spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence from intra-atomic transitions in Fe:InP”. Ha lavorato come assegnista presso il Dipartimento di Fisica di Bari continuando l’attività di ricerca sui rivelatori drogati con metalli di transizione. L’anno successivo ha vinto una borsa di studio del Programma Nazionale di Ricerca per la Microelettronica e la Bioelettronica in collaborazione con Fiat, Magneti Marelli e ST Microelectronics presso l’Università Tor Vergata di Roma per lo sviluppo di sensori automobilistici. Nel 2000 è stata assunta come Ricercatore presso il centro e-learning IBM a Bari per il quale ha coordinato e partecipato a diversi progetti come IT specialist e web developer. Nel 2008 è entrata come ricercatrice nell’Istituto di Cristallografia del CNR di Bari con l’obiettivo di contribuire allo sviluppo di software per la comunità scientifica cristallografica. Nel 2010 ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca in Fisica svolgendo attività di ricerca su nuovi metodi di phasing nella cristallografia di proteine sotto la supervisione del Prof. Carmelo Giacovazzo.

Nel 2016 è entrata a far parte della collaborazione n_TOF del CERN dove ha trascorso un anno per seguire l’implementazione di una stazione di imaging neutronico e la caratterizzazione delle aree sperimentali utilizzando simulazioni MonteCarlo. E’ esperta del toolkit Geant4 con il quale supporta il gruppo n_TOF del CERN nell’esecuzione di simulazioni sperimentali.

È coautrice del programma SIR utilizzato in centinaia di laboratori in tutto il mondo e SUNBIM, una suite di programmi per l’imaging a raggi X sopra e submolecolare di nano e biomateriali con tecniche SAXS, WAXS, GISAXS e GIWAXS. E’ autrice di parte del programma ROOTPROF e di 68 pubblicazioni scientifiche su riviste internazionali ad alto Impact Factor.

Negli ultimi anni, la Dott.ssa Mazzone ha concentrato le sue attività sull’applicazione di simulazioni Monte Carlo con Geant4 a diversi ambiti di ricerca. Il suo interesse principale sono:

  • progettazione di rivelatori e loro ottimizzazione.;
  • progettazione e caratterizzazione di aree sperimentali ;
  • fisica medica in particolare trattamento con radioterapia protonica e dosimetria.

Parte dell’attività di ricerca è rivolta allo sviluppo di approcci teorici e computazionali innovativi volti alla caratterizzazione strutturale di materiali di varia complessità mediante dati di diffrazione di raggi X.

Le competenze acquisite con Geant4 le hanno permesso di collaborare con gruppi di ricerca nazionali ed internazionali.

Unlocking the secrets of the cosmos, recent groundbreaking experiments conducted at CERN’s neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility have shed light on the enigmatic presence of cerium in our universe. Cerium, a vital component in various technological applications, holds a pivotal role in astrophysical phenomena, yet its origins have remained elusive—until now. Astrophysicists have long grappled with the puzzling abundance of cerium in celestial bodies. Traditional models of nucleosynthesis, the process by which elements are forged in stars, have struggled to account for the observed levels of cerium, leading to a significant rift between theory and observation. However, a beacon of hope emerged with the recent experiments spearheaded by researchers from the INFN, INAF, CNR and ENEA at CERN’s n_TOF facility. These experiments, meticulously designed and executed, revealed unprecedented insights into the production of cerium within stars. By scrutinizing the nuclear properties of cerium isotopes, scientists uncovered startling revelations that challenge existing paradigms of nucleosynthesis. The experiments unveiled a crucial discrepancy between theoretical predictions and observational data, magnifying the cerium paradox by 20%. This dissonance underscores the dire need for high-precision measurements of nuclear properties and refined models of element formation in stars. Moreover, the experiments delved into the intriguing realm of magic-number nuclei, elucidating the unique stability conferred upon cerium-140—an isotope pivotal in understanding cerium’s cosmic journey. These findings not only deepen our comprehension of nucleosynthesis processes but also hint at the existence of alternative pathways, such as the elusive “i process,” which may contribute to cerium production in low-metallicity stars. As we navigate the celestial tapestry, the quest to unravel the mysteries of cerium continues to captivate the minds of scientists worldwide. With each discovery, we inch closer to unraveling the intricate fabric of the cosmos and unlocking the secrets hidden within the stars.
