Francesca Petronella is a researcher at the Rome division of the “Institute of Crystallography” (IC) of the National Research Council since September 2019. After obtaining her degree in Chemistry and her Ph.D. in “Chemistry of Innovative Materials” from the University of Bari “Aldo Moro” in 2013, she worked as a research fellow at the Bari division of the “Institute for Physical and Chemical Processes” (IPCF) of the CNR. She conducted short visiting periods abroad: at Lausanne at EPFL (2012), in Warwaw at the group of Prof. F. Pierini in Warsaw at IPPT-PAN (in 2019 and 2022) and at Gdańsk University of Technology (2023 and 2024) where she gain new competences on the photothermal characterization of materials. Currently, she is involved in the development of optical biosensors based on plasmonic nanoparticles, consolidating various collaborations including one with Prof. L. De Sio at the Biophotonics Laboratory, Sapienza University of Rome focused on photothermal nanomaterials and liquid crystal metasurfaces.

-Synthesis of nanomaterials and preparation of nanocomposites using colloidal and photochemical techniques;
-Surface functionalization of nanomaterials with organic molecules;
-Techniques for immobilizing nanomaterials on rigid and flexible substrates;
-Spectroscopic and morphological characterization of colloidal nanomaterials and nanomaterials immobilized on substrates;
-Analysis of the photothermal properties of plasmonic nanomaterials and nanocomposites;
-Design and development of optical biosensors for applications in the health and environmental sector;

-Integration of liquid crystals in active plasmonic nanostructures
