Giannini Cinzia


I am an extremely curious person. Curiosity drives me to acquire tools to look at the world around me, trying to grasp its most intimate meanings. Since 2001 I have been working in the Crystallography Institute of the National Research Council and Crystallography has provided me with some of these tools to read the intelligible trace (handwriting) of crystals when properly illuminated with X-rays.

In these nearly 30 years of activity I have collaborated with numerous national and international research groups, offering my knowledge for the investigation of new materials that can be used for the most fascinating applications (nanomedicine, bioelectronics, energy).

I have worked with conventional, laboratory X-ray sources, but also with much more complex instrumentation, using European synchrotron light sources on numerous occasions.

If I had to summarize myself in a few words, I would rely on the words of Rita Levi Montalcini: I feel a highly imperfect person but capable of total dedication and of closing my eyes to the difficulties of life so that I can face problems that others, more critical and more acute, [or simply better than me,] they would not cope with (taken from “Elogio per l’imperfezione”).

Since 1991 I have been interested in structural studies on new materials of technological interest using numerous X-ray techniques. In particular in the experiments carried out in recent years in synchrotron light laboratories (as Main Proposer or co-Proposer) of which: 1 @ NSLS ( NY Usa), 3 @ LURE (Paris, France), 11 @ ESRF (Grenoble, France), 5 @ LNLS (Campinas, Brazil), 2 @ Elettra (Trieste, Italy), 11 @ SLS (Villigen, Switzerland) I used instrumentation, always at the forefront, which allowed me to acquire / deepen knowledge on the following X-ray diffraction and scattering techniques:

• Grazing Incidence diffraction (GID), X-ray Specular Reflectivity (XRR), Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-ray Scattering (GISAXS) & X-ray Standing Waves (XSW) for the study of surfaces, thin films and planar multilayer structures;
• Reciprocal Space Mapping (RSM) & High angular resolution diffraction (HRXRD) for the study of hetero-interfaces, multilayers, multiwires, lamellar structures deposited with physical techniques;
• Coherent X-ray Diffractive Imaging (CDI) & X-ray holography for the study of single non-periodic objects with coherent radiation, with the use of micro beams;
• Scanning X-ray Microscopy with SAXS and WAXS contrast for the study of tissues with the use of micro beams.
